P&R Responses for recommendation 55

Recommendation 55
Department Art
Consensus Opinion 11 out of 16 faculty/staff : With modifications
Consensus Explanation The Prioritization and Recovery committee recommendations that Graphic Design become a stand alone department (#7) and that it receive stable funding (#55) but unfortunately the two ideas are not
compatible. In order for Graphic Design to become a stand alone program in any College it must receive increased funding to provide the 490 majors with a quality education and meet their NASAD Accreditation requirements.
This can only happen if the number of faculty are increased and the number of majors remain stable until further growth can be accommodated. We also need increased funding to develop a long over due graduate program. This idea has been on hold for years since we have never had enough faculty to consider the possibility. Additional faculty could make this possible. We also need to desperately increase the current faculty salaries and build in release time for those who are publishing or participating in practice and/or creative activity. Currently, the faculty is so overloaded with teaching and service that their professional development is endangered. Furtherance of this will lower the program's prestige and deplete the faculty's value to the students.
Finally, according to the US Department of Labor among the five design occupations, graphic designers are expected to have the most new jobs through 2014. Graphic Designers with web-site design and animation (motion graphics) knowledge will have the best opportunities. Our program provides a number of courses in these areas but could significantly enhance them with an increase in budget and more faculty.
